Northern Illinois head coach Dave Doeren wouldn't rule wide receiver Perez Ashford out for Saturday's game at Western Michigan, although it's unlikely he'll play. Ashford suffered a sprained ankle in NIU's Week 5 win over Central Michigan.
Doeren said he expects Ashford and safety Dechane Durante, who has missed the past two weeks with a sprained ankle, back for UMass on Nov. 3.
Just like most teams in college football, NIU is banged up eight games into the season. On Wednesday, defensive end Alan Baxter and cornerback Rashaan Melvin didn't practice.
One player who was on the field was junior defensive end Joe Windsor, who was injured during Saturday's 37-7 win over Akron. Doeren said everyone is expected to play, with the exception of Ashford and Durante.
"We're in a stretch of the season where some guys just need a little bit more time," Doeren said.
