Northern Illinois senior defensive end Jake Coffman earned Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week honors after coming down with a win-clinching interception during the Huskies' 28-21 victory at Western Michigan on Saturday.
Coffman's interception at NIU's 12-yard line ended the Broncos' final drive. Sophomore safety Demetrius Stone hit WMU quarterback Alex Carder as he made the throw and the ball fluttered only a few yards past the line of scrimmage to Coffman.
Coffman also had four tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and half a sack on Saturday. Coffman leads the Huskies (7-2, 5-0 MAC) with seven tackles for loss and is tied with linebacker Devon Butler for the team lead with 2.5 sacks.
An NIU player has received one of the three MAC player of the week honors (offensive, defensive and special teams) for seven straight weeks.
