Northern Illinois coach Jerry Kill was asked at Tuesday’s press conference if he thinks Chad Spann can play in the NFL.
Rushing for 223 yards last week against Minnesota will bring about such queries.
But Spann currently ranks as ESPN.com’s 52nd ranked draft-eligible running back. Though, the senior tailback’s buzz rating likely has gone up a few notches after his dominating performance against the Gophers.
He admits he’s biased, but Kill said he’d take a flier on the tough-to-bring-down Spann, despite his size (listed at 5-foot-9, 198 pounds). Kill said Spann is a similar player to Southern Illinois running back Deji Akeem, who was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round last year.
“ They're both physical backs,” Kill said. “They both have a little bit more of a gear than you'd think. I certainly if I were a scout – I can't make their decisions for them – but I'd definitely take a look at (Spann). He's unique. He's just hard to tackle. I can't put my finger on it.
"He needs to keep the present pace he's keeping. Not so much yards, just keep playing well and stay healthy and I think all those things will fall into place for the young man. There's still a lot of football to be played."
At least one NIU fan makes the case for Spann in this highlight video on YouTube.
