NIU roundup: Baseball, softball both pick up wins over Bowling Green

The Northern Illinois baseball team remained undefeated in conference play by crushing Bowling Green, 11-0, in the Huskies home opener on Friday in DeKalb.

The Huskies (8-17 overall, 4-0 in Mid-American Conference West) collected 14 hits on the day, led by second baseman Samuel Vega, who went 4 for 5 with four runs and a solo homer. First baseman Tommy Hook was a perfect 3 for 3 with a run and an RBI and designated hitter Jesus Tovar and catcher Jacob Dunham each collected two hits.

“We had good at bats all game and got big hits when we needed them,” Northern Illinois coach Mike Kunigonis said.

The Huskies were leading 4-0 before they blew the game open with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Starting pitcher Joe Hawks picked up the win by throwing seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.

The Huskies and Bowling Green (5-17, 1-3 in MAC East) will play close out the series with a doubleheader starting at noon at Ralph McKinzie Field.

SOFTBALL

Offense leads Huskies over Bowling Green: Kali Kossakowski had a big day at the plate and the Huskies topped Bowling Green, 10-5, on Friday at Mary M. Bell Field in DeKalb.

The leadoff hitter for the Huskies, Kossakowski went 3 for 4 with three runs, two RBIs and a home run. Bekah Harnish was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Jenny Van Geertry went 3 for 4 with two runs.

Anne Allen and Kayti Grable each added two hits in the win for the Huskies, who combined for 15 hits as a team. The Huskies (15-11 overall, 3-1 in MAC West) led 5-0 early, before the Falcons tied it after scoring four in the top of the fourth and another in the fifth. However, Grable answered with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth to give the Huskies the lead for good. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth.
