CHICAGO – The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team posted its first top-10 finish of the season as it took seventh place in the Cougar Classic hosted by Chicago State at Harborside International Golf Center Tuesday.
NIU posted a final round 324 to finish the tournament with a 638, finishing 29 strokes behind first place Chicago State who won the tournament with a 609 (306-303). Brooke Melvin of Chicago State took home the individual title with a 145 (75-70).
“There were some good things that happened for us this week, but still have a lot to work on and a short time to do it,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We have a lot of work to do before UMKC and hopefully we can have a better showing out there.”
Samantha Coyne led the way for the Huskies posting her first career top-10 finish when she finished eighth with a 153. Coyne shot a final round 78, three strokes above her first round score. Taylor Ellett, who is playing as an individual, posted a top-20 finish, placing 19th after shooting a 157 (77-80).
“She did really well,” Kester said of Coyne’s play Tuesday. “The last tournament she played as an individual and showed a lot of good things. I gave her the chance this week and she proved she belonged in the line up. She did well.”
Sydney Brickey posted a 161 to finish in 31st. She shot a final round 81 to go along with her opening round 80. Jenny Niemiec and Casey LaBarbera finished in 32nd with a 162. Niemiec fired an 81 in both rounds, while LaBarbera slipped a bit in her final round shooting an 84 after her first round 78.
Connie Ellett finished in 54th after shooting a 167 and completes the list of Huskie golfers. Connie Ellett shot an 85 in her final round of play.
The Huskies return to the course in two weeks when NIU travels to the UMKC Kangaroo Fall Invitational. Tee time is set for 8 a.m.
