NASHPORT, Ohio –The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team is in eighth place after the second round of play at the 2013 Mid-American Conference Women’s Golf Championships at Longaberger Golf Course Saturday.
NIU shot a second round 330, and is 654 for the tournament. The Huskies trail Bowling Green (645) by nine strokes overall for seventh place. Kent State leads the field with a 601 and Jennifer Ha of KSU and Ball State’s Jenna Hague are tied for the individual lead with a 148.
Jenny Niemiec leads the way for NIU shooting a 160. She trimmed two strokes off her first round 81 to move up a spot to 22nd. Casey LaBarbara slipped a bit in her second round, shooting an 83. She is tied for 26th with a 162.
Connie Ellett is in 38th after carding a 166 (81-85), while Allie Parthie is 40th after scoring a second round 88 and has a 171 for the tournament. Taylor Ellett was the most improved Huskie on the day, cutting 12 strokes off her first round score. She is currently in 44th with a 174 (91-83).
“Jenny played well and Taylor bounced back after her round yesterday,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We just couldn’t execute shots we had been executing. Hopefully, we’ll be able to move up the leaderboard tomorrow and end on a strong note.”
The Huskies return to the course Sunday for final round play at the 2013 MAC Championships. The first Huskie will tee off at 6 a.m. CT. NIU will be playing with Ohio and Bowling Green.
