ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Northern Illinois track & field team wrapped up their stay in Michigan Saturday with several top performances at Grand Valley State's Big Meet.
In addition to eight personal record performances, the Huskies posted eight top 10 performances in the open half of the meet. Overall, NIU recorded 11 top 10 finishes in the two-day competition.
"Day two continued with the ladies exhibiting solid efforts," said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry. "The staff looks for athletes to improve on their performances from the weeks prior and several ladies competing today accomplished personal and season-best times. We have one meet until conference and we have several ladies that are on the borderline of qualifying. With the strong performances this weekend, we are hopeful to have additional ladies qualify next weekend at Ball State."
Senior sprinters Janay Mitchell and Megan Gregory once again found themselves near the top in their respective events. After taking seventh in the 60 meters Friday, Mitchell earned a sixth place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.40. Meanwhile, Gregory capped off her weekend by placing seventh in the 60 meters, clocking in at 7.96. Rounding out the top sprint performances was Natalie Tarter, who took eighth in the 60 hurdles with a 9.24 clip.
Jamie Burr recorded the highest finish of the day with a third place finish in the 800 meters. The sophomore from Onalaska, Wis., set a new personal record with a time of 2:14.80. Meanwhile, fellow Wisconsinite Ali Olson took 12th at 2:18.93, while Kristal Pitts placed 14th at 2:19.90. Hannah Savage nearly broke her PR with a 5:15.69 run in the mile, placing 10th.
In the relays, Jenelle McCalla, Erica Miller, Burr and Julie Cronin teamed up in the 4x400 relay for a sixth place finish. The quartet clocked in at 3:56.78, easily beating NIU's previous best of the season.
For field events, Ellen Renk tallied an eighth place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 36-01.50 (11.01m). Fellow jumper Alex Schad earned a 10th place showing in the long jump at 16-10.00 (5.13m). In the throws, Olivia Herzog posted a PR in the shot put, reaching 41-07.75 (12.69m).
The Huskies close out their indoor regular season Friday, Feb. 15, when they head to Muncie, Ind., for the Ball State Quadrangular.
