WACO, Texas – The Northern Illinois University softball team dropped a doubleheader with the host No. 22 Baylor Bears at the 12th annual Getterman Classic in Waco, Texas Saturday afternoon.
Originally set as a single game, the Huskies (2-2) and Bears (3-2) moved their Sunday game to Saturday in anticipation of severe weather header for the Waco area Sunday.
The NIU offense was held to one hit on the day, an RBI single by Shelby Miller scoring Nicole Gremillion, who reached base via an error and stole second to move into scoring position, in the first inning of Game One.
Given an early lead, pitcher Emily Norton held the Bears to five hits through the first five innings before the Bears broke through in the sixth inning with four runs on five hits and one error.
Jessica Sturm, who closed out the first game, started the nightcap and was strong in the circle. The sophomore southpaw held Baylor to one run on two hits. The Bears capitalized on lead-off double, scoring the lone run of the game two batters later.
“She’s definitely having a really good start,” said Sutcliffe of Sturm. “She’s getting confidence every inning she gets under her. She’s doing a good job of moving the ball in and out and keeping the batters off balance.”
The Huskies conclude play in the Getterman Classic tomorrow morning when Northern Illinois takes on Sam Houston State. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. CT. Fans can follow all the action live via Gametracker at NIUHuskies.com.
