SYCAMORE — A former Northern Illinois defensive lineman pleaded guilty Friday to attempted possession of marijuana.

Frank J. Boenzi, 20, of the 1000 block of Regent Drive in DeKalb, was charged June 11 with possessing 10-500 grams of marijuana and attempting to manufacture or deliver 10-500 grams of marijuana.

NIU officials confirmed earlier this month Boenzi was dismissed from the Huskies for a violation of team rules.

Police said they were handling another case when they began investigating Boenzi, who arranged a meeting to purchase marijuana, and it was clear that Boenzi intended to both purchase and sell marijuana.

During a hearing Friday at the DeKalb County Courthouse, Boenzi entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 18 months of conditional discharge and $600 in fines and costs. He also must forfeit all items seized to DeKalb police.

The second count was dismissed.
