The Daily Chronicle's sports section was honored with several awards this week at the annual Associated Press Sports Editors contest in Kissimmee, Fla.
The sports section was named one of the top 10 daily sports sections in the country in the under 15,000 circulation category and an honorable mention section in the under 30,000 circulation category. The prep football special preview section, which had a superhero theme, received the same honors in the special section category.
After being honored in APSE's web contest for HuskieWire.com, this makes the Daily Chronicle a triple crown winner with top 10 daily and special sections and a top 10 website.
The Daily Chronicle also took home the most writing awards in the paper's history at the APSE contest.
Our "How To" project, focusing on the specific skill set of local athletes in a variety of sports, was named one of the top 10 projects in the country. Writers for "How To" included: John Sahly, Ryan Wood, Anthony Zilis, Steve Nitz, James Nokes and Jake Dugger.
Sports editor John Sahly earned top 10 honors in breaking news for his story on the improved condition of Northern Illinois linebacker Devon Butler, who was the victim of a gunshot in April. Sahly also had one of the top 10 features, for a story on Belvidere North wrestler Eddie Avila. Avila's left leg had to be amputated from the mid-thigh down after a freak accident while wrestling against Genoa-Kingston last year. G-K put together a significant fundraiser and honored Avila and his family in a surprise ceremony at G-K.
