UMass football joins MAC

The days of playing an uneven Mid-American Conference football schedule is apparently over.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer is reporting the University of Massachusetts will join the MAC as a football-only member. The move gives the league 14 football programs and opens the door to two, seven-team divisions. Under the previous format, the MAC East had seven teams while the MAC West had six.

Among the things that stand out, UMass will begin playing a MAC schedule in 2012 but will be uneligible for a MAC Championship Game appearance or MAC-affiliated bowl game until 2013.
