Men's golf in contention at D.A. Weibring

The Northern Illinois men's golf team holds sixth place after the first round of play at Illinois State's D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.

Low rounds were scarce, as all but one of the 93 competitors turned in rounds over par on Saturday. That said, NIU (309, +21) turned in a solid first round performance at Weibring Golf Club. The Huskies lie a stroke behind a three-way tie for third place, and seven strokes off Illinois' lead.

"I was really pleased with the effort," said NIU coach Tom Porten. "It was a very difficult day, cold and windy. The greens were firm and fast, hole locations were very challenging. Pars were at a premium. It was a very fair but difficult course set up. We handled it well. Even though it was our highest first round score, it was our best first round performance because we did a very good job of keeping all five guys in it."

Leading the Huskies on Saturday was senior Jeff Dick, who bounced back from a tie for 65th at last week's Cardinal Intercollegiate with a first-round 74 (+2). The score puts the 2010 All-Mid-American Conference second teamer in a tie for fifth. Dick is two strokes off the pace entering the second round as he chases his second individual title in the calendar year.

"It was great to see Jeff Dick working very hard on his short game and becoming the patient player he was last spring," Porten said. "He's two over right now and has a good chance for a solid finish."

Senior Andrew Frame and sophomore Bryce Emory both fired opening round scores of 78 (+6). They share a tie for 23rd. Freshman Shawn Foley turned in a 79 (+7) after his sensational debut last week. Senior Tim Kay rounded out NIU's lineup at eight over par.

"We are looking forward to getting back at it tomorrow morning and challenging for the lead," said Porten.

Second round play was underway Saturday, but was suspended due to darkness. The Huskies will look to improve on their sixth-place position in the resumption of the second and whole third rounds Sunday morning.
