
The Northern Illinois track and field team hosted the second annual Huskie Open, Thursday, where the Huskies battled extremely windy weather conditions to walk-away with multiple first-place finishes and personal-best records. The Huskies hosted Robert Morris College at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex in their final regular-season competition before the Mid-American Conference Championships.
"We are still very excited that we were able to host the second-annual Huskie Open," NIU head track and field Coach Connie Teaberry said. "The team came out and performed extremely well. The windy conditions were unfavorable, but the athletes did a great job in each of their events despite the weather."
In the 100-meter dash, Rasheta Butler set a school record when she raced to a first-place and personal-best time of 11.83. Rhonda Lee and Chanel Kellyman also earned personal records in the event, racing to times of 12.04 and 12.26, respectively.
Roneisha Frye earned a personal-best record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.42, finishing just behind Megan Gregory who took first with a time of 14.17. Butler saw her second PR of the afternoon when she raced to a first-place time of 24.66 in the 200-meter dash. Gregory and Frye also set personal records in the event. Gregory raced to a time of 24.96 and Frye finished in 25.14, placing second and third respectively.
In the distance events, Breanna Brevitt, Courtney Oldenburg, and Samantha McConeghey each claimed first-place finishes in their respective events. Brevitt raced to a time of 5:18.58 in the 1,500-meter run, while Oldenburg ran the 800-meter run in 2:28.67. McConeghey ran the 3000-meter run for the Huskies, crossing the finish line in a time of 13:40.39. Frye, Gregory, Lee and Butler comprised the 4x100-meter relay team that took first with a time of 48.46.
