Softball falls to Bowling Green

The Northern Illinois softball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Bowling Green at Meserve Field on Saturday afternoon.

A three-run fourth inning by Bowling Green (10-15, 6-3) proved to be be all the offense the Falcons would need on the afternoon.

Freshman Monica Segura, who had been cruising through three innings, got into a jam in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on a lead-offdouble and back-to-back walks. Her counterpart, Melissa Bott, helped her own cause, dumping a one-out single into short right field driving in two runs to give the Falcons a 2-1 advantage. With the bases loaded and two outs, the Falcons added another run on an infield single by Rachel Proehl to give BG a3-1 lead after four innings.

Northern Illinois (17-24, 6-5)scored first in the contest after manufacturing a run in the third inning. Kate Welsh led off the inning with a walk and wassacrificed over to second by Zoe Sinner. Welsh advanced to third on a groundout by Amanda Sheppard and scored from third when Andrea Colosimo hit a sharp grounder to the shortstop who booted the ballallowing Welsh to score to give NIU a 1-0 lead

Segura fell to 3-9 on the seasonafter allowing three runs on three hits and six walks.

“We just had too many walks today,” NIU coach Lindsay Chouinard said.

Bott picked up the win, while Zada Lines picked up the save. Bott allowed one unearned run, on two hits in five innings of work with Lines pitching final two innings of the game.
