Women's track and field: Huskies finish 4th, set 11 personal records

By NIU Media Relations

MUNCIE, Ind.- The Northern Illinois women's track and field team concluded its regular season at the Ball State Quadrangular as the Huskies posted 10 top-five performances and multiple personal-best records to wrap up their regular season Friday at the BSU Field Sports Building in Muncie, Ind. The Huskies faced Mid-American Conference foes Ball State, Western Michigan, and Miami (Ohio) at the quadrangular.

"Our top-performances tonight were not something I foresaw coming into today's competition," NIU track and field coach Connie Teaberry said. "I thought our girls would do a lot better than they did. We had a lot of decent performances, but we also had a lot of performances that we did not perform very well in."

The Huskies came in fourth at the quadrangular with 81.5 points, falling behind Western Michigan (168), Ball State (123.5) and Miami (123).

In the 200-meter dash, both Jessica Johnson and Samantha Newman earned personal-best records. Johnson notched a personal-best time of 26.68 to finish 11th in the event, while Newman followed Johnson's lead, clocking in with a personal-best time of 28.29. Johnson notched her second personal-best record of the evening when she raced to a 7.91 finish in the 60-meter dash.

Sophomore Rasheta Butler also earned a personal-best time at the quadrangular when raced to a time of 58.99 in the 400-meter dash. Butler's time was a fourth-place finish for the Huskies.

The 800-meter run proved to be a success for the Huskies as Jenelle McCalla and Heather Childs each achieved personal records in the event. McCalla finished the race in a time of 2:26.83, while Childs crossed the finish line in a time of 2:35.40.

In the distance events, Breanna Brevitt, Nancy Maritim, and Jackie Sciacero represented the Huskies by notching career-best records in their respective events. Racing in 3,000-meter run Maritim and Sciacero each hit personal records, clocking in with a third-place time of 11:14.12 and sixth-place time of 12:34.43, respectively. Brevitt achieved a personal-best in the 1-mile run, when she finished the race in a time of 5:24.68.

Off the track, both Amanda Schwab and Rachel Pinson were able to walk away from competition with personal records in the shot put. Schwab threw a distance of 36-6.25, while Pinson earned a PR with a mark of 34-00.75.

"Tonight, the girls just did not bring their "A" game," said Teaberry. "Hopefully it is something that they got out of their system before we head to the MAC Championships next week."
