Wrestling: Northern Iowa shuts out NIU

By NIU Media Relations

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team suffered a 36-0 shutout at the hands of Northern Iowa Friday in Victor E. Court at the Convocation Center.

"We came out flat," NIU coach Dave Grant said."They [Northern Iowa] were in good position and they wrestled hard. We just didn't bring our `A' game tonight. We wrestled well all season long, but we took a step back tonight. We've got to come back, refocus and get ready for MAC competition next week."

The Huskies (9-9, 1-3), struggled right out of the gate, dropping the first match, 7-3, at 133. Vince Castillo fought hard in the next match at 141, but suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Charlie Ettelson. A major decision and a technical fall at 149 and 157 respectively, put the Huskies in a 15-0 hole from which they would never recover.

John Odeen at 165 and Mason True at 174 each suffered one-point losses, with Odeen losing, 3-2, and True falling 4-3. Sophomore Izzy Montemayor also dropped a one-point decision, falling to Caleb Flores, 3-2, in the final match of the night.
