Sycamore running back Marckie Hayes decided on Monday that he will be a preferred walk-on at Northern Illinois next fall, much like former teammate Jason Schepler did two seasons ago.
Hayes finished 2009 with 1,792 yards and 17 touchdowns while leading the Spartans to the Class 5A quarterfinals for the first time since 1978 before falling to eventual state champion Montini.
Hayes said that it still isn’t decided what position he will play, but defensive back is a strong possibility. Hayes also returned kicks for the Spartans and played some wide receiver.
“It’s been in my backyard my entire life,” Hayes said. “I’m real happy right now, I know I need to work my butt off.”
