LINCOLN, Neb. – Senior Kylie York hit two three-pointers to tie the Northern Illinois women's basketball record for threes made in a career, as the Huskies fell 69-44 to No. 24 Nebraska, Sunday afternoon at the Devaney Center.
York has totaled 221 treys over her four-year Huskie career, tying Denise Dove for the most in NIU history. York has made 20 threes this year, to go with 48 as a freshman, 77 in her sophomore year, and 76 last season. Her sophomore and junior performances stand as the second and third best-single-season totals for NIU.
"It's a great accomplishment for Kylie, and she still has a lot more in front of her," NIU coach Carol Owens said. "It's especially impressive considering how long Denise had that record."
Junior Marke Freeman, who co-led the Huskies (3-6) with 11 points, also tapped into the record books. She totaled a career-high eight steals, tied for the fifth-most in one game by a Huskie.
"Marke's quickness was a huge benefit for us on both ends of the floor," Owens said. "She was a floor general out there for us today."
The Cornhuskers improved to a school record 10-0 to remain one of 13 undefeated teams in the nation. They jumped out to an 11-2 lead over the first five minutes thanks to six points by Dominique Kelley. A pair of free throws from Kelley with 11:35 left in the first half gave Nebraska a double-digit lead, 15-4, which it would not relinquish.
The Huskie defense held one of the nation's top offenses to 69 points, their second-lowest total of the season. But shooting struggles gnawed at the Huskies, as they hit 25 percent (17-of-68) of their field goal attempts, and went 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) on three-pointers.
In addition to Freeman's 11 points and eight steals, she contributed three assists and two rebounds. Junior Ebony Ellis also totaled 11 to go with six rebounds, five on the offensive glass. Junior Mauvolyene Adams led NIU with 10 rebounds, and added four points.
Nebraska's leading scorer was Kelley with 13, followed closely by Cory Montgomery, a 6-3 senior forward, who scored 13. Yvonne Turner added 10 for the Cornhuskers, and NIU held All-American candidate Kelsey Griffin to just nine points, half of her season average.
