
FARGO, N.D. – The Northern Illinois University wrestling team scored victories over North Dakota State and Morehead State at the North Dakota State duals on Sunday.
"We won two of the three matches and we've already surpassed our win total from last year," NIU head coach Grant said. "I don't think we came our as hard as we should, but I thought we finished pretty good in the matches. We have to wrestle with more intensity. Some guys did a real nice job. They came out with a great attitude."
Bryan Deutsch and John Odeen highlighted the afternoon for the Huskies (6-3) as both went undefeated on the day. Deutsch opened his day by defeating No. 17-ranked Keenan Davis of Oregon State, 14-8, at 157, while Odeen gave the Huskies their second victory over No. 21 Oregon State when he posted a 10-3 decision over Ryan Smith at 165. Northern Illinois fell to the Beavers, 36-6.
"I thought Bryan had an excellent day," Grant said. "I thought John Odeen had a great day. He wrestled hard and won all three of his matches."
The Huskies scored their first victory of the day winning five matches as they beat North Dakota State, 23-16. Deutsch scored a major decision victory over Vince Salminen, 18-7, at 157. Odeen also posted a major decision victory, beating Tyler John, 11-2.Scott Penny (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) pinned the Bison's Drew Ross in 1:43.
NIU concluded the day with a 41-9 victory over Morehead State. Odeen concluded the afternoon with his second major decision victory of the day, defeating Morehead State's, 11-2, at 165 and Penny recorded his second straight pin fall victory, pinning Jacob McLean in 41 seconds at 197.
