Get your passports soon

By JOHN SAHLY - jsahly@daily-chronicle.com

The deadline for a passport to travel to Toronto for the Northern Illinois vs. South Florida matchup in the International Bowl on Jan. 2 is tight.

It takes an estimated 4-6 weeks to get one, so fans will have to act fast. But you can pay an extra $60 for expedited service, cutting the estimated time to receive a passport to 2-3 weeks.

You must apply for a passport in person if: You are applying for your first U.S. passport, you are under age 16 or your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16, your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged, your previous U.S. passport was issued more than 15 years ago or your name has changed since your U.S. passport was issued and you are unable to legally document your name change.

You also must submit evidence of one of the following: a previously issued, undamaged U.S. Passport; a certified birth certificate issued by the city, county or state; a consular report of birth abroad or certification of birth naturalization certificate or a certificate of citizenship. You must also have proper identification, such as a previously issued, undamaged U.S. passport, a naturalization certificate, a valid driver’s license, a current government ID (city, state or federal) or a current Military ID (military and dependents). If you apply at an acceptance facility and submit out-of-state primary identification, you must present an additional ID document, as well.

Also, you must submit a photocopy of the identification document presented. The photocopy must be of the ID document that you will present when you apply.

The fee for a passport is a $75 application fee and a $25 execution fee for first-time applicants. The application fee is $60 if you are under age 16.

Finally, you must provide two photographs. Your photographs must be identical, in color, 2x2 inches in size, taken within the past 6 months, showing current appearance, full face, front view with a plain white or off-white background between 1 inch and 13⁄8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head and taken in normal street attire.

You can also apply for a U.S. passport card to enter Canada, but it cannot be used for international air travel. The card costs $45 for a first-time adult passport applicant and $35 for all minor applicants under age 16, regardless of whether they are previous passport book or card holders. Adults who already have a fully valid passport book may apply for the card as a passport renewal by mail for a cost of only $20.

Facilities to apply for a passport are located at: DeKalb post office (600 E. Lincoln Highway), the County Clerk’s office in Sycamore (110 E. Sycamore St.), 106 E. State St. in Sycamore, the Wasco post office (40 W 514 Route 64), the St. Charles post office (2600 Oak St.) the Hinckley post office (557 E. Lincoln Ave.) and most area post offices.
