The Northern Illinois women's cross country team wrapped up its 2009 season Saturday at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Springfield, Mo. when junior Sunsea Shaw lead the Huskies with a six-kilometer time of 22:43.0 to finish first for the Huskies.

"Everyone ran well today," said assistant cross country coach Mark McConeghey. "Sunsea had her best race of the year, Nany Maritim got a personal record, and overall the girls raced really well. "

Shaw placed 74th overall at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, while teammate Nancy Nieto finished closely behind with a time of 23:13.2 to place second for the Huskies and 96th overall.

Rounding out the Huskies top performers were Nancy Maritim who recorded a personal-best time of 24:06.0 and Breanna Brevitt who ran the race in a time of 24:47.20 to finish third and fourth for the Huskies, respectively.

"I am happy with how the season went," said McConeghey. "Next year is a long time away, but we have a young team and we are excited for next year and excited to see where our program will go."

The Huskies did not post a team place after having two runners injured during the race. Courtney Oldenburg and Amanda Trancoso were unable to finish the race Saturday, after a combination of weather and personal injury combined to prevent them from crossing the finish line.

Minnesota finished the race in first with 60 points while Illinois (86), Iowa State (106), Nebraska (147) and Iowa (160) rounded out the top-five teams at the regionals.
