KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Northern Illinois women's soccer team notched its fifth shutout of the season Thursday as the Huskies battled Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan to a 0-0 tie at the WMU Soccer Complex to conclude their 2009 season.
NIU came out firing, outshooting the Broncos five to one, with three cornerkicks to WMU's one in the first half of play. In the second-half goalkeeper Lindsey Curnock recorded two saves for the Huskies to push the game into overtime play.
The Huskies (5-11-3, 2-5-3 MAC) and Broncos battled to a scoreless finish when both NIU and WMU recorded eight shot attempts and three cornerkicks but were unable find the back of the net on any of the opportunities.
Kelsey Passaglia led NIU with three shots and one shot on goal for the Huskies. In the contest, Lisa Maier fired two shots, while Kim Schmitt, Jamie Sitter and Mo Smunt each recorded one shot attempt for the Huskies.
Curnock notched her fourth shutout of the season, when she recorded four saves in the contest to hold the Huskies to a 0-0 draw against Western Michigan. Today's game brings Curnock to 75 saves on the season.
"Defensively we have played tough all season," NIU women's soccer coach Carrie Barker said. "We created several opportunities on the attack, and I am very proud of how hard we fought today."
Anina Cicerone led the charge for the Broncos, recording four shots, with two shots on goal, but was unable to score against the Huskies' defense.
