Trio leads NIU women's tennis

Kelly Phillips, Kathryn Friedlund and Emily Rogers all posted two singles wins in the consolation draw, highlighting the Northern Illinois women's tennis team's performance in day two of the ITA Midwest Regionals Saturday in Urbana, Ill.

In singles play, Phillips recorded back-to-back straight set wins over Eastern Illinois' Shannon Brooks (6-2, 6-2) and IPFW's Ingrid Ballus (6-0, 6-1), followed by Friedlund's three-set (2-6, 6-2, 10-6) victory over Raquel Viscovi from IPFW, and 6-4, 6-3 win over EIU's Amanda Dibbs.

After dropping a straight-set decision versus Yuka Kobayashi from IPFW, Rogers fought back with back-to-back wins over Bradley and Eastern Illinois in the consolation back draw. Sara McLaughlin also won two matches, including a win over NIU's Brittni Fausett, and a straight-set (7-6 [7-3], 6-2) victory over Kobayashi.

In the doubles main draw, Fausett and Rogers fell to Ballus and Kobayashi in a hard-fought 8-6 decision, and Friedlund and McLaughlin were outlasted by Alexis Dorr and Ally Majercik from Iowa, 8-3. In consolation action, Fausett and Rogers answered with two-consecutive doubles wins over Bradley and Eastern Illinois, followed by Friedlund and McLaughlin's 8-5 victory over IPFW.
